Eric Church on Why Music Is Going to Save Us

· April 19, 2021 ·

Ever since he got booted off the Rascal Flatts tour in 2006 for playing too long, Eric Church has been country music’s middle finger, upending the way things are done in Nashville with both his albums and his live show. His new record Heart & Soul is a wildly ambitious triple album — one titled Heart , one & , and one Soul — that he wrote and recorded in the mountains of North Carolina with longtime producer Jay Joyce and an army of trusted songwriters. Instead of a studio, he commandeered a restaurant and challenged himself to write and record a song a day. The result is an urgent, seat-of-your-pants record, with songs that salute Church’s fans (“Through My Ray-Bans”), celebrate his rebel image (“Lone Wolf”), and bite the hand that feeds him (“Stick That in Your Country Song”). After reinventing the country music tour in 2019 by doing away with opening acts, playing three-hour gigs, and shuffling the set list from night to night, Church is determined to be one of … [Read more...] about Eric Church on Why Music Is Going to Save Us

Seven BMC hospital projects worth Rs 2,000 crore make little progress in two years

Five of them were approved in June 2018 but are less than 10 per cent complete; the planned addition of nearly 3,000 beds could now have helped in the pandemic Even as the BMC has been battening down the hatches in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s come to light that five out of seven hospital projects that began in 2018 are not even 10 per cent complete. Two other projects are less than 50 per cent complete. The civic body’s Health Infrastructure Cell (HIC) was to add nearly 3,000 beds to five hospitals , which could have helped the city in the current crisis. However, these projects, costing nearly Rs 2,000 crore, have been moving at asnail’s pace. The five hospitals that have shown non-existent progress are a new building for Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, MT Agarwal Hospital in Mulund, Bhagwati Hospital in Borivali, Bandra’s Bhabha Hospital revamp and redevelopment of a new building in Sion Hospital . The two that are nearly half complete are a hostel and a … [Read more...] about Seven BMC hospital projects worth Rs 2,000 crore make little progress in two years

The World Changed a Lot Since 1986. The Politics of Immigration Hasn’t | Opinion

· April 19, 2021 ·

In pursuing a bold agenda to tackle the pandemic, build new infrastructure and halt climate change, there is a futuristic feeling to the Biden administration's early policy blitz. But its immigration bill, is retro. It's not retrograde. It's just retrospective. In 1986, former President Ronald Reagan signed the last major overhaul of U.S. immigration law, the Immigration Reform and Control Act. IRCA, as it is known, increased border security, established penalties for employers that hired undocumented immigrants and legalized the status of about 3 million undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. prior to 1982. "Future generations of Americans will be thankful for our efforts to humanely regain control of our borders and thereby preserve the value of one of the most sacred possessions of our people: American citizenship," Reagan said upon signing the legislation. Similarly, the Biden administration's bill grants legal status to millions of farmworkers, Dreamers who … [Read more...] about The World Changed a Lot Since 1986.
