France attack: Church sexton had throat slit while preparing for Mass

· October 30, 2020 ·

PARIS/NICE: As he did every day, Vincent Loques, sexton of the Notre Dame church in the French city of Nice opened up the doors around 8.30am. There were few people around; the first Mass of the day was not due to start for another two hours. But soon after he started work on Thursday morning (Oct 29), a Tunisian man armed with a knife entered the church and, over the course of 20 minutes, slit the 55-year-old sexton's throat, beheaded a 60-year-old woman, and badly wounded a third woman who was 44, according to prosecutors. The sexton and the older woman died on the spot, while the younger woman managed to make it to a cafe across the street, where she died from her wounds, France's chief anti-terrorist prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard said later on Thursday. The attacker was shot by police officers who detained him, and is being treated in hospital. Testimony from witnesses, mobile phone footage, and accounts from officials offered an initial picture of the events leading up … [Read more...] about France attack: Church sexton had throat slit while preparing for Mass

Pope Francis, with new cardinals, warns Catholic Church against mediocrity

· November 29, 2020 ·

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis, joined by the church’s newest cardinals in Mass on Sunday (Nov 29), warned against mediocrity as well as seeking out “godfathers” to promote one's own career. Eleven of the 13 new cardinals sat near the central altar of St Peter’s Basilica, where Francis on Saturday had bestowed upon them the red hats symbolising they are now so-called princes of the church. Two of the new cardinals could not make it to Rome because of COVID-19 pandemic travel complications. The freshly-minted cardinals who did come to the Vatican wore protective masks and purple vestments, as the Church began the solemn liturgical season of Advent in the run-up to Christmas. READ: Pope installs new cardinals, including first African-American In his homily, Francis decried what he called “a dangerous kind of sleep: It is the slumber of mediocrity”. He added that Jesus “above all else detests lukewarm-ness”. Being chosen to head Vatican departments or eventually … [Read more...] about Pope Francis, with new cardinals, warns Catholic Church against mediocrity

Kobe’s Iniesta sets his sights on deep run in Asian Champions League

· November 26, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Andres Iniesta has set his sights on steering Asian Champions League debutants Vissel Kobe to the latter stages of the competition as the Spanish World Cup winner looks to finish a disappointing year on a high for the Japanese club. Iniesta was on target for Kobe on Wednesday as the J-League side defeated twice champions Guangzhou Evergrande to become the first club to secure their place in the last 16 of the eastern half of the draw in the continental championship. Vissel have endured a difficult domestic season, with coach Thorsten Fink fired in late September and Kobe still languishing in 11th place in the 18-team J-League despite owner Hiroshi Mikitani lavishing significant funds on his team. But Iniesta is hoping a change of scenery and the win over Guangzhou in the club’s first game since arriving in Doha at the weekend can kick-start an improvement in Kobe’s fortunes. “It hasn’t been easy in Japan, but in a different competition maybe the players have a … [Read more...] about Kobe’s Iniesta sets his sights on deep run in Asian Champions League

French Muslims, stigmatised by attacks, feel under pressure

· November 1, 2020 ·

PARIS: The pressure rises with each gruesome attack. After three in five weeks, France’s Muslims are feeling squeezed. A spotlight of suspicion was trained on them again even before the latest acts of extremist violence, including two beheadings. President Emmanuel Macron has forged ahead with his effort to rid Islam in France of extremists, part of a project he labels “separatism”, a term that makes Muslims wince. Amid intensifying rhetoric and fresh attacks by outsiders, including the killings of three people Thursday (Oct 29) at a Catholic church in Nice, Muslims in France have kept their heads down and chins up. But deep down, some are squirming, feeling they are being held responsible. “It’s worrisome for Muslims,” said Hicham Benaissa, a sociologist who specialises in Islam in the workplace. Within his network, he said, some “talk about leaving France. The situation is tense. There is fear.” Islam is the second religion in France, which has the largest Muslim population … [Read more...] about French Muslims, stigmatised by attacks, feel under pressure
