Colorado Elections are a Home Run | Opinion

· April 19, 2021 ·

While I am thrilled that Colorado will host the 2021 Major League Baseball ( MLB ) All-Star Game, the anticipation and excitement of this announcement was tempered by the reason for MLB's decision to move the game from Atlanta to Denver—the new Georgia law that limits voting access and disproportionately impacts communities of color in the state. I am a Coloradan and a Rockies fan, but I am also a fierce believer in providing more Americans access to the ballot regardless of where they live and vote. Laws like the one in Georgia, and those under consideration by state legislatures across the country, seek to disenfranchise Americans based on the big lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Given the tremendous work the state of Colorado has done to expand voting access, earning us accolades from voting experts and our own citizens, I was disappointed to hear in the wake of MLB's decision, misleading and false claims asserting Colorado's voting laws are as restrictive as Georgia's. … [Read more...] about Colorado Elections are a Home Run | Opinion

China’s Myanmar lessons for BRI ambitions

· April 20, 2021 ·

Kindly Share This Story: By Subir Bhaumik China’s President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is up against a huge challenge in what Beijing had started considering as its backyard. Pro-democracy protestors, who see China as the main backer of the military junta that seized power on Feb 1, have started attacking Chinese business interests as never before. The anti-Chinese violence is reminiscent of the one that swept across Myanmar in 1967-68 when the Ne Win led military regime, resenting Chinese backing for a Communist insurrection, provoked public anger against Chinese business interests. Twenty years later, China regained trust of the Burmese military Tatmadaw by backing its ruthless suppression of the 1988 uprising and ended up turning Myanmar into a satellite or so it would have thought. 2. The first jolt to its ambitions came into 2008-09 when Kachin tribesmen successfully opposed the $6bn Myitsone hydel project, triggering a furious … [Read more...] about China’s Myanmar lessons for BRI ambitions

Super League football shows shift to ‘closed shop’

· April 20, 2021 ·

The shock formation of football's European Super League highlights a shift by the world's richest clubs away from sporting merit and towards a "closed shop" that gives them more financial security, analysts say. The continent's best-known teams are seeking to capitalise on their long-running success with the creation of the Super League, under plans denounced as greedy by Europe's football governing body UEFA. Six Premier League teams -- Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur -- have joined forces with Spanish giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and Italian trio Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. That has however also sparked condemnation from politicians and fans, particularly at lower league clubs who may face lower revenues from television deals. "What it means with the shift from the fundamentals of European football -- and also European sport in general -- it moves from sporting merit being the primary driver to … [Read more...] about Super League football shows shift to ‘closed shop’

advertisement advertisement advertisement When a fixer-upper in a D.C. suburb recently went up for sale, it got 88 offers —76 of them all-cash. It ultimately sold for $185,000 over the asking price—emblematic of the current housing market. Across the country, from Georgia to Wisconsin, many houses are selling within days or even hours after they’re listed, at prices far higher than a year ago. In some cases, the buyers are investors who can pay cash. It keeps getting harder for first-time buyers to compete. advertisement A startup called Ribbon is trying to give ordinary buyers an edge: If the buyers can’t afford to make a cash offer themselves, the company will make the cash offer for them and give the buyer time to get a mortgage. “We started the company with one mission and focus, which was helping everyday families achieve homeownership. . . . When we were looking at the problems in the market, we consistently saw situations where … [Read more...] about This startup helps homebuyers make all-cash offers when they don’t have enough money in the bank
