Permit needed for community pantries to ensure safety, security — DILG exec

· April 20, 2021 ·

GET WHAT YOU NEED Inspired by the Maginhawa community pantry project in Quezon City, the labor group Defend Jobs Philippines has opened its own food station on Matimyas Street in Sampaloc, Manila, to help those in need. —NIÑO JESUS ORBETA MANILA, Philippines — Community pantry organizers would need a permit from local authorities in order to ensure that social distancing and other health and safety protocols are followed,  Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño said Tuesday. “Why (do they need a permit)? Una, paisa-isa lang ‘yan, ngayon, dahil i-brinoadcast na ng ating mga television network itong napaka-noble na inumpisahan dito sa Maginhawa, dinumog na ng tao. Ibig sabihin hindi na ma-control wala nang control at pati yung protocol ngayon ay na-violate na,” Diño said in an interview on ABS-CBN News Channel (At first, only a few went there, but after the initiative in Maginhawa was featured by the media, people … [Read more...] about Permit needed for community pantries to ensure safety, security — DILG exec

Colorado Elections are a Home Run | Opinion

· April 19, 2021 ·

While I am thrilled that Colorado will host the 2021 Major League Baseball ( MLB ) All-Star Game, the anticipation and excitement of this announcement was tempered by the reason for MLB's decision to move the game from Atlanta to Denver—the new Georgia law that limits voting access and disproportionately impacts communities of color in the state. I am a Coloradan and a Rockies fan, but I am also a fierce believer in providing more Americans access to the ballot regardless of where they live and vote. Laws like the one in Georgia, and those under consideration by state legislatures across the country, seek to disenfranchise Americans based on the big lie that the 2020 election was stolen. Given the tremendous work the state of Colorado has done to expand voting access, earning us accolades from voting experts and our own citizens, I was disappointed to hear in the wake of MLB's decision, misleading and false claims asserting Colorado's voting laws are as restrictive as Georgia's. … [Read more...] about Colorado Elections are a Home Run | Opinion

The World Changed a Lot Since 1986. The Politics of Immigration Hasn’t | Opinion

· April 19, 2021 ·

In pursuing a bold agenda to tackle the pandemic, build new infrastructure and halt climate change, there is a futuristic feeling to the Biden administration's early policy blitz. But its immigration bill, is retro. It's not retrograde. It's just retrospective. In 1986, former President Ronald Reagan signed the last major overhaul of U.S. immigration law, the Immigration Reform and Control Act. IRCA, as it is known, increased border security, established penalties for employers that hired undocumented immigrants and legalized the status of about 3 million undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. prior to 1982. "Future generations of Americans will be thankful for our efforts to humanely regain control of our borders and thereby preserve the value of one of the most sacred possessions of our people: American citizenship," Reagan said upon signing the legislation. Similarly, the Biden administration's bill grants legal status to millions of farmworkers, Dreamers who … [Read more...] about The World Changed a Lot Since 1986. Biden Is Bringing Back a Long-Abandoned Policy to Compete with China | Opinion

· April 19, 2021 ·

America is about to revive an idea that was left for dead decades ago. It's called industrial policy, and it's at the heart of Joe Biden 's plans to restructure the U.S. economy. When industrial policy was last debated in the 1980s, critics recoiled from government "picking winners." But times have changed. Devastating climate change, a deadly pandemic, and the rise of China as a technological powerhouse require an active government pushing the private sector to achieve public purposes. The dirty little secret is that America already has an industrial policy, but one that's focused on pumping up profits with industry-specific subsidies, tax loopholes and credits, bailouts, and tariffs. The practical choice isn't whether to have an industrial policy but whether it meets society's needs or those of politically powerful industries. Consider energy. The fossil fuel industry has accumulated "billions of dollars in subsidies, loopholes, and special foreign tax credits," in Biden's … [Read more...] about Biden Is Bringing Back a Long-Abandoned Policy to Compete with China | Opinion
