A 25-year career in broadcasting and meteorology has given me plenty of opportunities to cover major weather events. There have been category five hurricanes, blizzards that have buried towns and cities, devastating flash floods, ice storms that took out power for weeks and tornadoes carving paths of destruction for hundreds of miles. Never in my life did I ever predict that I would find myself in the middle of a raging storm involving one of the most powerful leaders in America. But after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo effectively issued a death warrant that helped kill thousands of elderly, including my husband's parents, I felt it was important to use my voice to speak out for those that no longer had one. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) approval rating has dipped six points since it was revealed that the administration covered up the number of coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes out of fears of a federal investigation, a Morning Consult survey released Monday found. The survey, taken February 12-21 among 3,203 registered New York voters, showed Cuomo with 57 percent approval. While it seems positive on the surface, that reflects a six-point drop from the 63 percent approval he saw in the last survey taken prior to the New York Post bombshell, which featured the stunning admission from Melissa DeRosa, New York’s secretary to the governor. The last survey, taken February 2-11, also showed Cuomo’s disapproval at 33 percent. House Oversight Committee Republicans have asked Chairwoman Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) to subpoena New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to testify before the panel on coronavirus deaths in his state’s nursing homes, according to a report. The situation is a cautionary tale not only about political corruption, but about the consequences of a nursing home infrastructure being run by for-profit corporations—and now a study documents some of the body count. The analysis found that between 2004 and 2016, more than 20,000 Americans perished as a consequence of living in nursing homes run by private equity firms.
