Bayern are still league leaders with 42 points, five more than Wolfsburg. Hoffenheim (28 points) are third and will now have to focus on defending third spot, which is just as important considering it secures a Champions League qualifying spot. Football: Wolfsburg battle past Schalke, Leipzig also reach German Cup last eight
WOLFSBURG, Germany: VfL Wolfsburg battled their way past Schalke 04 1-0 on Wednesday to reach the German Cup quarter-finals along with RB Leipzig, who crushed second division VfL Bochum 4-0 with a double from Yussuf Poulsen. The in-form Wolves, in third place in the Bundesliga, have won their last four games in all competitions without conceding a goal. Schalke keeper Ralf Faehrmann did well to save Wout Weghorst's 40th-minute penalty but the Dutchman stabbed in on the rebound for the winner. The Royal Blues, in last place in the league, should have equalised on the stroke of halftime but American teenager Matthew Hoppe was denied from close range by keeper Koen Casteels with a sensational reflex save. Schalke battled hard and had their share of chances after the break, going close again through Mark Uth midway through the second half, but the striker failed to connect with a cutback in front of goal. LONDON: Jadon Sancho scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season as Borussia Dortmund returned to the top four with a 2-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on Sunday (Jan 3). The hosts, who were looking to rebound from a 2-1 loss to Union Berlin last month, took the lead at the Signal Iduna Park when Swiss centre back Manuel Akanji headed home a Sancho corner in the 66th minute. "It wasn't an easy match. Wolfsburg started the game well but we found our way into it more after 15 minutes," Akanji said. "We created a few opportunities for ourselves and might have scored one or two goals. Defensively, we were solid. "I'm happy that Jadon played in such a good cross for me and I was able to get the goal. We're happy with the three points." REUTERS: A solitary goal from a Josip Brekalo free kick gave VfL Wolfsburg a 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart on Sunday to return them to the Bundesliga's top four. The hosts had a goal disallowed in the first half before they found the breakthrough in the 49th minute which moved them fourth, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich heading into the league's winter break. The result extended their unbeaten record at home in the league to seven games while Stuttgart, seventh, lost for the first time on the road this season. Wolfsburg's German midfielder Yannick Gerhardt had earlier found the back of the net with a header but the goal was disallowed for a foul in the build-up. Stuttgart's best opportunity to equalise came in the 70th minute when Nico Gonzalez nearly scored from a tap-in only to see his miscued shot cleared off the line. Earlier, Freiburg thrashed Hertha Berlin 4-1 to record their third successive league win to move up to 10th after Italian winger Vincenzo … [Read more...] about Wolfsburg beat Stuttgart 1-0 to move into Bundesliga top four
