Xiaomi’s profit jumps as smartphone shipments surge

· November 24, 2020 ·

SHENZHEN/SHANGHAI: Xiaomi Corp on Tuesday reported a 19per cent jump in third-quarter net profit, beating estimates, as the Chinese smartphone maker's shipments over the quarter surged by 45.3per cent on a year earlier. Xiaomi has grabbed market share in China and Europe as its rival Huawei Technologies has faced U.S. sanctions that have hit its supply chain. The company expects it will continue to gain market share after the latest round of U.S. sanctions against Huawei disrupted its supply chains in August.. Xiang Wang, Xiaomi's president, when asked whether Huawei's problems had helped Xiaomi, said that the company was "paying attention to what is happening into the market," but was continuing with its own strategy. Xiaomi's smartphone revenue rose to 47.6 billion yuan, an increase of 47.5per cent in the same period, it said in a statement. Overall, quarterly revenue rose to 72.1 billion yuan, up from 53.7 billion yuan. "In Q3 we reached a record high (in revenue), … [Read more...] about Xiaomi’s profit jumps as smartphone shipments surge

Exclusive: Huawei in talks to sell parts of its Honor smartphone business – sources

· October 14, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in talks with Digital China Group Co Ltd and other suitors to sell parts of its Honor smartphone unit in a deal that could fetch up to 25 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion), people with knowledge of the matter said. Embattled Huawei is resetting its priorities in the face of U.S. sanctions and will focus on its higher-end Huawei phones rather than the Honor brand which is aimed at young people and the budget conscious, they said. The assets to be sold have yet to be finalised but could include Honor's brand, research & development capabilities and related supply chain management business, two of the people said. The deal may be an all-cash sale and could end up smaller, worth somewhere between 15 billion yuan and 25 billion yuan, one of the people said. Digital China, the main distributor for Honor phones, has emerged as the frontrunner but other prospective buyers include Chinese electronics maker TCL and rival smartphone maker Xiaomi … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Huawei in talks to sell parts of its Honor smartphone business – sources

Huawei to sell phone unit for US$15b to Shenzhen government, Digital China, others: Sources

· November 10, 2020 ·

HONG KONG: Huawei plans to sell budget-brand smartphone unit Honor in a 100 billion yuan (US$15.2 billion) deal to a consortium led by handset distributor Digital China and the government of its home town of Shenzhen, people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The plan comes as US restrictions on supplying Huawei Technologies force the world's second-biggest smartphone maker - after South Korea's Samsung Electronics - to focus on high-end handsets and corporate-oriented business, the people said. It also indicates little expectation for any swift change in the US perception of Huawei as a security risk following a new US administration, one of the people said. The all-cash sale will include almost all assets including brand, research & development capabilities and supply chain management, the people said. Huawei could announce it as early as Sunday, one of the people said. Main Honor distributor Digital China Group will become a top-two shareholder of sold-off … [Read more...] about Huawei to sell phone unit for US$15b to Shenzhen government, Digital China, others: Sources
