Commentary: Indonesia seeks to abolish national exams but could end up creating a new rat race

· January 27, 2020 ·

JAKARTA: In December last year, Indonesia’s Minister of Education Nadiem Makarim announced sweeping changes to the education sector through four priority reforms. One of them is the abolition of the country’s annual national exams. The exams will be replaced by what the minister dubs a “minimum competency assessment and character survey”. Inspired by concepts used in the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA), it aims to measure students’ numeracy and literacy levels at grade four, eight, and eleven. Set as an important factor determining students’ graduation, the national exams have been notorious for causing high levels of anxiety in students, parents and teachers. The exams have also failed to contribute to improvements in the quality of school education. Citi targets more growth in Saudi Arabia after adding over 20 bankers in two years

· July 3, 2020 ·

DUBAI: Citigroup is planning to hire more bankers in Saudi Arabia for its direct custody business after adding more than 20 for onshore capital markets in the last two years, its Europe, Middle East and Africa head said. The bank, which following a 13-year hiatus returned to Saudi Arabia in 2018 after being granted a capital markets licence, said last year it would also expand its direct custody and clearing services to the oil-rich kingdom. David Livingstone told a conference on Thursday that while there was no set time-table for the lender to obtain a full banking licence in Saudi Arabia, the outlook for financial sector activity is positive. "That is something we want to participate very strongly in," he said. "Recently we secured our direct custody and services licence and we will be growing that business." The division provides services from trading execution to clearing to institutional investor clients. Citigroup was among the banks that advised Saudi Aramco on the … [Read more...] about Citi targets more growth in Saudi Arabia after adding over 20 bankers in two years

· March 1, 2021 ·

JAKARTA: Indonesian resort island Bali has launched a drive-thru vaccination campaign targeting thousands of hospitality workers, as the popular tourist destination eyes reopening to foreign visitors. Billed as the first such campaign in Southeast Asia, Bali's drive-thru vaccinations kicked-off at the weekend. The programme aims to inoculate around 5,000 workers in hospitality and ride-sharing services by the end of this month. The campaign was rolled out at Nusa Dua Bali Convention Center in Bali's capital Denpasar, set up in partnership with Southeast Asian ride-hailing giant Grab. READ: 'A lost generation': COVID-19 takes emotional toll on Indonesia’s young "This drive-thru programme is good, because for us drivers who work on the street every day, we are very vulnerable to being exposed to the virus," a ride-hailing driver Zul Widodo told AFP. In August, Bali closed the door to foreign tourists over COVID-19 concerns, battering its key tourism sector. How Moderna execs are cashing in on COVID-19 vaccine stock speculation

· July 3, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Biotech firm Moderna Inc could reap tens of billions of dollars in sales and stock appreciation if it wins the race for a COVID-19 vaccine. If it loses, the early-stage company’s value could crash. In the meantime, the firm’s chief executive is pocketing millions of dollars every month by selling shares that have tripled in price on news of Moderna’s development progress, a Reuters analysis of corporate filings shows. The sales - by CEO Stéphane Bancel, his childrens’ trust and companies he owns - amount to about US$21 million between January 1 and June 26, including US$6 million in May. The company’s chief medical officer, Tal Zaks, has cashed out the majority of his available stock and options, netting over US$35 million since January, the filings show. The lucrative liquidations highlight the unusually powerful incentives for biotech executives to highlight development milestones for drugs that often never get approved or sold, according to interviews with seven … [Read more...] about How Moderna execs are cashing in on COVID-19 vaccine stock speculation
