How has China achieved an effective interaction between the state and its citizens to eradicate absolute poverty? Tennis: ATP allows four new events for 2020, WTA adds Czech tournament
LONDON: Four new tournaments were added to the provisional ATP calendar for the remainder of the 2020 season while the WTA added an event in the Czech Republic in October, the men's and women's tours announced on Thursday (Sep 10). The German city of Cologne will host back-to-back ATP 250 events on indoor hard while Sardinia will stage a clay court event and Nur-Sultan in Kazakhstan will host an indoor event. The events will be on single-year licence as the ATP offers professionals the opportunity to earn money and ranking points in the wake of the COVID-19 shutdown. All the events will be subject to satisfying strict health and safety, international travel and ATP event requirements. Ex-FIFA secretary general Valcke and BeIN sports chairman go on trial over TV rights
BELLINZONA, Switzerland: Former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke and the chairman of Qatar-based media group BeIN Sports, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, went on trial in Switzerland on Monday over the award of television rights for the World Cup and Confederations Cup. The 59-year-old Valcke, already banned by FIFA's ethics committee for 10 years for ethics violations, has been charged with accepting bribes, aggravated criminal mismanagement and falsification of documents. A former Davis Cup tennis player for Qatar, the 46-year-old Al-Khelaifi is regarded as one of the most powerful men in European football. Commentary: How a century-old dispute between Japan and South Korea threatens the global supply of smartphones
PARIS: Japan and South Korea are showing no signs of resolving an escalating trade dispute, which traces back to 1910. It now poses a threat to the world’s tech supply chain and has potentially severe consequences for the global economy. And the dispute is being played out within a complex confluence of historical grievances, domestic politics, the ongoing US-China trade war and a looming global recession. Japan has officially removed South Korea from its list of trusted trade partners that receive preferential treatment for importing sensitive Japanese-made goods, as of Aug 28. The list of goods includes chemicals that are crucial to producing the semiconductor memory chips found in most modern electronic devices. This means that Japanese companies will now have to apply for a license to export the chemicals to South Korean companies, a process that could take up to 90 days. Semiconductors are South Korea’s top export item. From a global perspective, South Korea … [Read more...] about Commentary: How a century-old dispute between Japan and South Korea threatens the global supply of smartphones
Commentary: Major countries are concerned about implications of China’s rise. So is China
SAINT PAUL, Minnesota: President Joe Biden is so far maintaining his predecessor’s tough China policy, which aims to curb China’s international power both economically and politically. In the US and Europe, China is widely recognised as a rising star that threatens Western power. But my research on the country suggests China may no longer see itself that way. CHINA’S RISE There have been three discrete eras in China’s approach to international relations. After the death of the Communist Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1976, Mao’s successors, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, introduced economic reforms that launched China on a path of phenomenal economic growth. The country rose from 11th to second place in the global GDP rankings between 1990 and 2020. The prevailing view in Western capitals in the 1990s was that China’s economic transformation would inevitably culminate in an affluent, peaceful and democratic country.
