SALZBURG, Austria: Opera legend Placido Domingo on Sunday (Aug 25) received a standing ovation at the Salzburg Festival, his first performance since he was accused of sexually harassing women. "Triumph in Salzburg, standing ovation for Domingo despite the Me Too affair," a headline in the regional daily Kleine Zeitung said, following his performance in the Giuseppe Verdi opera "Luisa Miller" at the annual music and drama festival in Austria. Eight singers and a dancer told the Associated Press earlier this month they were sexually harassed by the former member of the much lauded "Three Tenors", in incidents going back to the 1980s. In a report by the AP, several women, one of whom was identified, accused Domingo of using his position as one of opera's most celebrated singers to pressure them into sexual relationships. The Los Angeles Opera has opened an investigation into the "concerning allegations". Following the claims, the Philadelphia Orchestra Association withdrew its … [Read more...] about Domingo gets standing ovation in Salzburg despite sexual harassment claims

Action movie Angel Has Fallen tops US box office with S$29.5m debut
Angel Has Fallen, the third chapter in Lionsgate and Millennium's action franchise starring Gerard Butler, had a stronger opening weekend than expected, collecting US$21.25 million (S$29.5 million) during its first three days of release. Those ticket sales were enough to top US box office charts, bumping last weekend's champ, Universal's comedy Good Boys, to second place. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Good Boys generated US$11.75 million in its sophomore outing, boosting its domestic total to US$41.4 million (S$57.6 million). Angel Has Fallen nearly matched the US$21.6 million debut of its predecessor, 2016's London Has Fallen. The first film, 2013's Olympus Has Fallen, kicked off with US$30.4 million. Opening weekend crowds were virtually split across gender lines (51 per cent male), while almost 60 per cent of moviegoers were over the age of 30. Audiences awarded Angel Has Fallen with a strong A- CinemaScore, high praise compared to its 40 per cent average from critics on Rotten … [Read more...] about Action movie Angel Has Fallen tops US box office with S$29.5m debut
Coronavirus: MPs, volunteers find new ways of reaching out
Coping during the circuit breaker period could be sometimes lonely and difficult for Madam Izamzamah Kusmon, 49, a single mother and caregiver to her 68-year-old mother, who suffers from a heart disease. "I don't have many friends that I can talk to, and my mother and I don't really talk or share so much with each other," she said. As a stroke survivor, she is at greater risk of complications like pneumonia if she contracts the coronavirus, which means she should try to stay home as much as possible. But her mother and children, aged 11 and 12, rely on her to obtain groceries and meals, as there is no other adult in the house who can settle these errands. Though restrictions that limit social gatherings and interactions are in place, grassroots volunteers and MPs have found new ways to reach out swiftly to residents like Madam Izam, who may be more vulnerable during the circuit breaker period. These include regular phone or video calls, expanded free meal delivery … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: MPs, volunteers find new ways of reaching out
All staff, residents at homes for the elderly to be tested for Covid-19
SINGAPORE - All 30,000 staff and residents in Singapore’s residential care homes for the elderly will be tested for the coronavirus, starting with those who have acute respiratory symptoms, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Friday (May 8). As a precaution, staff in these homes – which include welfare and nursing homes – will stay in onsite facilities or move to hotels until the circuit breaker is lifted, if their job involves interacting with residents. Although Singapore has not seen widespread Covid-19 outbreaks in these facilities, it is undertaking these measures as overseas experience has shown such outbreaks can be catastrophic, said the Health Ministry (MOH) in a separate statement. Mr Gan noted that people aged 60 and above are most vulnerable to the virus, with 90 per cent of Covid-19 deaths here occurring among this group. Nearly one in six seniors developed severe symptoms and required intensive care, he added at a virtual press conference held by the multi-ministry … [Read more...] about All staff, residents at homes for the elderly to be tested for Covid-19
More patients with chronic health conditions willing to take up telemonitoring: SingHealth Polyclinics
SINGAPORE - Patients with chronic health conditions such as diabetes have shown increased willingness to take up telemonitoring, a trend which is needed to help curb rising morbidity and mortality in Singapore's ageing population. However, its feasibility depends on the patients' proactiveness and their acceptance of communication technologies for healthcare services, said SingHealth Polyclinics on Tuesday (Dec 15), which is currently recruiting more than 150 hypertension patients to test its effectiveness. Telemonitoring involves remote monitoring of vital parameters of a patient, such as blood pressure or blood sugar levels, outside the healthcare setting. SingHealth said it enables care providers to take prompt measures to prevent complications that develop in between visits, which may go unnoticed for patients who rely solely on physical consultations for chronic diseases. Associate Professor Tan Ngiap Chuan, director of research at SingHealth Polyclinics, noted its use … [Read more...] about More patients with chronic health conditions willing to take up telemonitoring: SingHealth Polyclinics
