JOHANNESBURG: South Africa's MTN is branching into the online shopping space by providing its customers with the option to pay for online purchases using mobile money payment instead of a bank card. The spread of COVID-19 has accelerated the adoption of mobile financial services, which are increasingly being recognised as a means to mitigate the use of bank notes and coins amid the pandemic. With demand for e-commerce growing rapidly in South Africa, MTN will launch mobile money (MoMo) Pay for online shopping this week, it said in a statement on Monday. It has an agreement with major partners to enable over 4,000 e-commerce websites to accept MoMo and will also partner with small-medium enterprises with e-commerce channels. "We expect the overall list of partners to grow to over 30,000 sites over the next several months," said MTN South Africa's Mobile Financial Services Chief Officer, Felix Kamenga. H&M’s online second-hand shop Sellpy launches in Germany
STOCKHOLM: Swedish online second-hand shop Sellpy, which is majority-owned by fashion giant H&M, has launched in Germany in a first step outside its home market as it bets on shoppers trending towards more sustainable consumption. The start-up handles the entire sales process from picking up the goods from sellers' homes, to photographing, selling and shipping. Sellpy announced in May that it would double its warehouse capacity in Sweden, to near eight million items annually, due to strong demand. Since Sellpy's foundation in 2014, more than 6 million items have been sold through the platform, it said. The second-hand market is one of the fastest growing economic sectors within the fashion industry, Sellpy and H&M said in a joint statement on Monday. H&M first invested in Sellpy in 2015 and now holds a 70per cent stake. "We see that the awareness and demand from our customers for sustainable fashion is constantly growing and is now probably greater than ever," … [Read more...] about H&M’s online second-hand shop Sellpy launches in Germany
FedEx shares soar almost 9per cent as quarterly results top expectations
LOS ANGELES: Shares of FedEx Corp jumped 8.5per cent in extended trading on Tuesday after a surge in pandemic-fueled home deliveries helped the U.S. package carrier post better-than-expected quarterly profit and revenue. Adjusted profit at Memphis-based FedEx fell by almost 50per cent to US$663 million, or US$2.53 per share, for the quarter ended May 31. Revenue slipped to US$17.4 billion from US$17.8 billion a year earlier. Analysts, on average, expected a profit of US$1.52 per share on revenue of US$16.4 billion, according to Refinitiv IBES data. FedEx said the novel coronavirus pandemic hit virtually all of the company's revenue and expense line items. Executives declined to provide an earnings forecast for fiscal 2020, citing the uncertain timing and pace of an economic recovery. FedEx is grappling with a flood of coronavirus-related e-commerce shipments as it rebuilds from its split with Amazon.com Inc , a major customer, and the costly integration of TNT Express in … [Read more...] about FedEx shares soar almost 9per cent as quarterly results top expectations
When is the 2021 Budget – and what will be in it? Stamp duty, furlough and more
The 2021 Budget will feature everything from booze, fuel and cigarettes to wages, housing and Britain's Covid response. Rishi Sunak is set to focus on four themes - "support, vision, recovery, honesty" - when he addresses the nation in his annual statement next Wednesday. The Tory Chancellor is tipped to extend furlough, the Stamp Duty cut and other Covid support by three months, and the £20-a-week Universal Credit uplift by six months. He will unveil grim financial projections on Britain's economy and begin to sketch a vision for how it'll be made better post-vaccine - with grants of up to £18,000 for lockdown-battered firms to reopen. He could announce a string of other measures to help the economy recover - though some of these, like schemes to push people back into shops and restaurants, may not come until later. And aides promise he'll be "honest" about the need to claw back £280bn of Covid spending - as corporation tax could be hiked and income tax allowances … [Read more...] about When is the 2021 Budget – and what will be in it?
