ESSEN: German fourth division side Rot-Weiss Essen pulled off a stunning comeback in extra-time to beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 and reach the quarter-finals of the German Cup on Tuesday. After being held for 90 minutes, Bundesliga side Leverkusen pulled ahead just before halftime in the extra period through Leon Bailey but Oguzhan Kefkir equalised early in the second half. Simon Engelmann snatched an unlikely winner in the 117th minute for Essen, who knocked out second division Fortuna Dusseldorf in the last round and last lifted the Cup back in 1953. The Baton Rouge Fire Department is investigating a morning fire at Sushi Masa in Baton Rouge.The blaze happened around 4 a.m. Monday at the restaurant’s location on 5837 Essen Lane.No one was injured in the fire, according to BRFD. Officials say when firefighters arrived at the restaurant a small fire coming from a trash can next to the building had spread. Most of the damages to the building were on the outside, while the inside had some smoke and water damage. Shipley Do-Nuts is set to return to the Baton Rouge market with a location on Essen Lane after years of absence.Construction is underway on the restaurant at 5565 Essen, near the Picardy Avenue intersection. The space had most recently been occupied by Pokeworld Sushi. A Google listing for the shop indicates an opening date of January 20, 2021.Along with an array of glazed and filled doughnuts, Shipley will also sell kolaches.Founded in 1936, the Houston company has 300 franchise locations in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Tennessee. A Metairie location opened in 2018 and the local franchisees have said they plan to open a Lafayette restaurant.Shipley had a location on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard. A $16 million project to widen heavily-traveled Essen Lane between Interstate 10 and Perkins Road is set to be finished in roughly one month, officials said Tuesday. Earlier this month the state Department of Transportation and Development announced that workers were putting travel lanes into their final configuration. The project is widening the roadway from five to six lanes – three in each direction. New turn lanes on Essen Lane at I-10 expected to help traffic flow; more work on busy roadway still to come The city-parish is unveiling new turning lanes from Essen Lane to Interstate 10 that are expected to ease traffic snarls. A new northbound lane is being added as well as additional shoulder space near existing lanes. The overhaul will include what officials call a two-way center lane between the interstate and Perkins, which means motorists headed north or south will have a designated corridor to turn. A man shot himself and another person Tuesday afternoon in what appears to be an attempted murder-suicide that claimed the life of the suspected shooter but spared the victim, officials said. The man was pronounced dead on the scene, and the woman was transported to the hospital with injuries. She is expected to survive, said East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks. The shooting, which stemmed from a domestic situation, occurred on Picardy Avenue off Essen Lane, officials said. A man and woman were found suffering from gunshot wounds after a domestic situation escalated into shots fired, Hicks said. She said the shooting occurred at or near a medical building.
