SINGAPORE: The National Environment Agency (NEA) on Friday (Aug 23) said that its Gravitrap system - which is designed to attract and trap female Aedes mosquitoes looking for sites to lay their eggs - enabled it to detect and destroy 21 per cent more breeding habitats in 2018 compared to the previous year. Gravitraps have also been useful in helping NEA remove a large number of Aedes aegypti adult mosquitoes, including infected female mosquitoes, the agency said in a media release. About 50,000 Gravitraps have been deployed at Housing and Development Board (HDB) estates islandwide since NEA began using the system in 2017. Another 14,000 traps will be rolled out at landed estates and newly completed HDB areas from the second half of this year, NEA said. “Resource optimisation from such a data-driven surveillance system has also allowed NEA to re-deploy manpower for other urgent dengue prevention tasks,” it added. Coronavirus: Vulnerable seniors being supported during circuit breaker
Seniors in need are continuing to receive help as social service agencies and volunteer networks providing essential aid remain active during the circuit breaker period. For example, a network of volunteer groups and ground-up movements, coordinated by the National Council of Social Service, has been distributing meals, surgical masks, disinfectants, sanitiser, exercise bands, telecommunications equipment and SIM cards to seniors, Minister for Social and Family Development Desmond Lee told a press conference yesterday. "Through these distributions, the volunteers take the opportunity to guide seniors on the necessary precautions that need to be taken such as frequent hand washing, and check if the seniors need any other assistance such as transport to their medical appointments," he said. This is being done with minimal movement and interaction of people on the ground, he added. He said his ministry is also joining other agencies on safe distancing patrols to advise seniors to … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Vulnerable seniors being supported during circuit breaker
E-sports: Progress in Singapore but work to do to catch up with regional players
SINGAPORE - When Alaric Choo was competing in real-time strategy game Starcraft II semi-professionally eight years ago, there was little to play for. Back then, opportunities to make a living from e-sports were scarce. Sponsorships often came in the form of products such as a gaming mouse or keyboard in exchange for having the sponsor's logo on the athletes' attire. Since then, the e-sports industry has grown rapidly, with international tournaments boasting prize pots worth several millions while market research firm Newzoo estimated that the global e-sports audience will grow to 495 million people in 2020 - an 11.7 per cent increase from 2019. Singapore has produced several e-sports athletes who have made their mark on a global stage, including Dota 2 player Daryl "iceiceice" Koh, whose total earnings from tournaments exceed $1 million. Last November, three Singaporeans - Charleston "Scythe" Yeo, Jerome "Response" Kwek and Nicholas "CoupDeAce" Wilson Ng - were part of the … [Read more...] about E-sports: Progress in Singapore but work to do to catch up with regional players
Coronavirus: Game on for Singapore’s e-sports scene
SINGAPORE - All around the world, stadiums and sports arenas have fallen silent in recent months with the coronavirus pandemic bringing major sports leagues and events to a standstill. With mainstream sports such as football, tennis and golf on hiatus, and as many countries place their citizens in lockdown or shelter-in-place notices, many are turning to e-sports and gaming as an alternative - whether as a participant or spectator. Twitch, one of the world's biggest streaming platforms for gamers, is estimated to have grown its audience by 31 per cent in March. Steam, a video game digital distribution service, hit an all-time record of concurrent users on April 3 and 4, with over 24 million users. In Singapore, local e-sports organisation Team Flash, whose athletes are streaming content on Facebook, said it has seen viewership triple since the pandemic started. According to e-sports analytics and market research firm Newzoo, global e-sports revenues will grow to US$1.1 billion … [Read more...] about Coronavirus: Game on for Singapore’s e-sports scene
