‘For Law & Order’: Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp Among Apps Temporarily Banned Amid Unrest in Pakistan

· April 16, 2021 ·

One day after banning Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), the government of Pakistan has imposed a five-hour ban on WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Telegram, and Twitter in the country, in a bid to restrict fake or provocative information from being spread. The ban on the apps will last from 11:00 AM IST until 4:00 PM IST. In an official statement, the Interior Ministry of Pakistan directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to block the operations of the aforementioned social networking apps with immediate effect. "In order to maintain public order and safety, access to certain social media applications has been restricted temporarily", the official statement from Pakistan's Interior Ministry said. Aiming to cut all public forms of communication for the banned organisation TLP, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) also blocked all television channels from providing any form of coverage for the Islamist political and religious party. … [Read more...] about ‘For Law & Order’: Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp Among Apps Temporarily Banned Amid Unrest in Pakistan

With open markets turning into Ramadan bazaars, Sabah govt wants strict enforcement

· April 16, 2021 ·

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has ordered local authorities to take action against those who have turned open markets into Ramadan bazaars, attracting large crowds. With the state government already disallowing Ramadan bazaars, some areas with open markets in the state were seen crowded with people and there was little or no enforcement in checking the large numbers. "The local councils must act immediately and take action to control overcrowding. The health menace is real," Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Masidi Manjun said when contacted on Friday (April 16). As Sabah is seeing a resurgence of cases touching three digits after seeing double-digit figures over several weeks, Masidi said: “We are very concerned with what appears to be another wave of community infection. "The high number of new cases in Sandakan and Tawau is worrying." He said he had ordered the State Covid Management Committee to discuss steps to be taken by local authorities in dealing with open-air … [Read more...] about With open markets turning into Ramadan bazaars, Sabah govt wants strict enforcement

3 resign from Auschwitz museum board over appointment of right-wing politician

· April 16, 2021 ·

Three members of the advisory council for the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Poland resigned after the government appointed a member of the country’s right-wing ruling party to serve on the body, The Associated Press reported Friday. The Culture Ministry appointed former Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo to a four-year term on the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Council. The nine-member group of Poles meets once a year to advise the museum’s director and is separate from the International Auschwitz Council, which is made up of Holocaust survivors and experts. Szydlo faced backlash in 2017 when she appeared to defend her conservative anti-migrant policies during a memorial observance at the former Nazi death camp. She said that “in today’s restless times, Auschwitz is a great lesson showing that everything must be done to protect the safety and life of one’s citizens.” ADVERTISEMENT She later denied that her highly-criticized remarks were about refugees. The politician is … [Read more...] about 3 resign from Auschwitz museum board over appointment of right-wing politician

France Toughens Law on Sex With Minors, But Introduces an Exception Clause

· April 16, 2021 ·

The French parliament has adopted legislation that defines sex with minors as rape and carries a punishment of up to 20 years in jail. "This is a historic law for our children and our society. No adult aggressor will be able to claim the consent of a minor younger than 15-years-old", Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti told the National Assembly, commenting on the news. The approval of both houses of parliament means the bill has become a law. While sex with a minor was previously prohibited in France, according to the old legislation, a minor could consent to sex, which resulted in minor punishments for adults. Moreover, the previous legislation made it difficult for prosecutors to indict an individual on rape charges as they had to prove that sex was nonconsensual. For comparison, legal codes in other countries specify that rape is when an adult has sex with a person below the age of consent. The newly adopted law in France characterises sex with a child under 15 the same way. … [Read more...] about France Toughens Law on Sex With Minors, But Introduces an Exception Clause
