SINGAPORE: The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) would welcome Mr Lee Hsien Yang, should the brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong decide to join its ranks, its Secretary General Tan Cheng Bock said on Friday (Jul 26). But, Mr Tan added, Mr Lee would have to “adhere” to the party’s terms. “Lee Hsien Yang and I, we’re good friends,” said Mr Tan at a press conference held at Swissotel Merchant Court, where he was outlining the reasons for setting up his party . “I think you all have seen him walking around with me. And I must say is that if he wants to join me, he’s always free to join me. “As long as he must adhere to my PSP terms. Because many people think that he’s coming to join me because of his own personal agenda. “He must make clear what is his personal agenda ... If he ever joins, he must join on my terms.” READ: Tan Cheng Bock says new party will be 'unifying alternative' for Singapore Mr Lee, who has been seen in public with Dr Tan on more than one … [Read more...] about PSP would welcome Lee Hsien Yang as long as he sticks to party’s terms: Tan Cheng Bock

Mastermind in staged car accident conspiracy tricking insurers to pay S$125,500 gets jail
SINGAPORE: One of the masterminds in a series of car insurance claim scams that tricked insurers into paying out about S$125,500 for fabricated car accidents was jailed for two years and seven months on Monday (Sep 14). Tay Boon Hian, 46, pleaded guilty to three charges of engaging in a conspiracy to cheat, with eight other charges taken into consideration. His lawyer argued that a "discount" should be given as the offences were committed in 2008, and he was detained only last year after being initially released without charges. The court heard that Tay was then an owner of a car leasing firm and an operator of another. He supplied cars from BM Car Leasing for staged traffic accidents with which he and his co-masterminds made fraudulent insurance claims. The other men included his then-employee Kenneth Wong Chong Wee, who helped plan and assist in providing vehicles for the staging of the "accidents". Wong also recruited a "phantom driver", while another man Ng Chong Khai … [Read more...] about Mastermind in staged car accident conspiracy tricking insurers to pay S$125,500 gets jail
ByteDance picks Oracle as partner to try to save TikTok US: sources
REUTERS: Oracle beat Microsoft in the battle for the U.S. arm of TikTok with a deal structured as a partnership rather than an outright sale to try to navigate geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington, people familiar with the matter said. ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese owner, had been in talks to divest the U.S. business of its hugely popular short-video app to Oracle or a consortium led by Microsoft Corp after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the sale last month and said he might otherwise shut it down. While TikTok is best known for dancing videos that go viral among teenagers, U.S. officials are concerned user information could be passed to China's Communist Party government. TikTok, which has as many as 100 million U.S. users, has said it would never share such data with Chinese authorities. Sale negotiations were upended when China updated its export control rules last month, giving it a say over the transfer of TikTok's algorithm to a foreign buyer. Commentary: Major countries are concerned about implications of China’s rise. So is China
SAINT PAUL, Minnesota: President Joe Biden is so far maintaining his predecessor’s tough China policy, which aims to curb China’s international power both economically and politically. In the US and Europe, China is widely recognised as a rising star that threatens Western power. But my research on the country suggests China may no longer see itself that way. CHINA’S RISE There have been three discrete eras in China’s approach to international relations. After the death of the Communist Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1976, Mao’s successors, Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin, introduced economic reforms that launched China on a path of phenomenal economic growth. The country rose from 11th to second place in the global GDP rankings between 1990 and 2020. The prevailing view in Western capitals in the 1990s was that China’s economic transformation would inevitably culminate in an affluent, peaceful and democratic country.
