Orang Asli land under threat in Pahang as Musang King plantations grow
RAUB, Pahang: The loud grunts of a crane’s engine pierced the silence of Bukit Telaga Village, near the foot of Pahang’s tourist hotspot Fraser’s Hill. The sound reverberated through the forest and interrupted the tireless croaking of crickets. "That’s them at it again," said Mr Tam, an Orang Asli in his 40s who has lived at the village all his life. “Clearing forests to make way for more durian farms. The sound gets louder each day.” The villager, who only wanted to be known as Mr Tam, belongs to one of the nine Orang Asli families who live at Bukit Telaga. He told CNA that they are worried about how the plantations are encroaching on their land and surrounding forests where they gather food from. He recounted incidents when members of his clan would argue with plantation workers for entering their village to look for more land. “It’s not peaceful here anymore. We don’t sleep well because we are scared the fruits and property we have will be stolen,” said Mr Tam. … [Read more...] about Orang Asli land under threat in Pahang as Musang King plantations grow
Orang Asli village in Kelantan afflicted with measles outbreak: Malaysian health minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed on Monday (Jun 17) that there is a measles outbreak among the Batek Orang Asli community in Kelantan, where 15 deaths have been reported. In a statement, Dr Dzulkefly said 37 people out of 112 who have been sick had tested positive for measles as of Saturday. "However, tests for tuberculosis, melioidosis, leptospirosis and the coronavirus came back negative. Based on the test results, (we can say that) the Kampung Kuala Koh Orang Asli community is facing a measles outbreak," he said. Dr Dzulkefly attributed the measles outbreak to low rates of immunisation within the indigenous community. Only 61.5 per cent of the tribe members received the first dose of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccination, while 30 per cent received the second dose. "We face difficulty in providing healthcare services to the Batek tribe because of their nomadic lifestyle. Malnutrition is another reason that leads to risks of infection … [Read more...] about Orang Asli village in Kelantan afflicted with measles outbreak: Malaysian health minister
Outbreak in Orang Asli village in Kelantan not associated with mining activity: DPM Wan Azizah
GUA MUSANG, Kelantan: The Malaysian government has not managed to pinpoint the cause of an outbreak after 14 people of the Batek indigenous community died and dozens were hospitalised. Deputy Prime Minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said on Friday (Jun 14) that the outbreak was not due to the manganese mining activity, adding that the test results showed that the water quality in the area was in compliance with the national standard. “The Jun 12 test (of a water sample) also found no pollution from palm oil waste, pesticides and herbicides,” she said during a visit to the National Disaster Management Agency's operations centre at Felda Aring 10. Dr Wan Azizah said investigations by the Department of Environment also found no manganese mining waste disposal at Felda Aring 10, which is about 10km away from the Orang Asli settlement in Kuala Koh. She pledged that the government, through the Health Ministry, would continue to try and find the cause of the tragedy, which saw 103 … [Read more...] about Outbreak in Orang Asli village in Kelantan not associated with mining activity: DPM Wan Azizah
Kelantan settlement cordoned off after Orang Asli deaths, cause of illness yet to be identified
GUA MUSANG, Kelantan: The Orang Asli village in Kuala Koh – where 14 people died and 50 were warded for respiratory complications – has been cordoned off while the authorities identify the exact cause of their illness. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said on Monday (Jun 10) that those affected were most possibly suffering from a secondary viral infection, but tuberculosis and leptospirosis have been ruled out. “There is a manganese mine in the area, and lung disease could be one of the illnesses caused by mining,” he said during a press conference at the Gua Musang Hospital. Those in the village, a Batek indigenous tribe, said the deaths started since early May. Postmortem on two of the deceased revealed that they had died from pneumonia. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy said it is the culture of people in this nomadic tribe to leave their community when they become gravely sick. For this outbreak, those who died when they were on the move … [Read more...] about Kelantan settlement cordoned off after Orang Asli deaths, cause of illness yet to be identified
