The Kangra district administration on Wednesday said special provisions will be made to vaccinate the Dalai Lama against COVID-19 after the Dharamsala-based Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) wrote to the Indian government about this. The CTA, also known as the Tibetan government-in-exile, had asked the Centre and the Kangra district medical officer to vaccinate the Dalai Lama and those working around him at the earliest, its secretary of health Palden said. "We have also requested for vaccination of the whole Tibetan community living in India," he added. When contacted, Kangra Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Prajapati said no special permission is required for this, and added, "Everyone above 60 will be vaccinated. For His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we will make special provisions." Earlier, Kangra Chief Medical Officer Gurdarshan Gupta said the request by the CTA for vaccination of the Dalai Lama and the people living around him was sent to the government. "Permission has come … [Read more...] about Modalities being worked out for Dalai Lama’s COVID-19 vaccination: Kangra authorities

Tibetan Buddhists Ask India to Vaccinate Dalai Lama
Members of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the government of Tibet in exile, requested that the Indian government aid in vaccinating the Dalai Lama, the top authority in Tibetan Buddhism, against the Chinese coronavirus. Indian media reported on Wednesday that New Delhi is considering the request. The CTA describes itself as the legitimate and democratically elected government of the Tibetan people. The Chinese government occupied Tibet in 1950 and continue to control most of the territory. The Communist Party has repressed ethnic Tibetan people for decades and lately intensified programs to control Tibetan Buddhism. Beijing has considered the Dalai Lama an enemy of the state for years. The Dalai Lama currently lives in exile in India. Beijing has attempted to usurp his ability to name the second most powerful person in the religion, the Panchen Lama; his handpicked choice disappeared as a child in 1995. The Chinese government has since claimed a rival that it … [Read more...] about Tibetan Buddhists Ask India to Vaccinate Dalai Lama
Tibetan Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche accused of sexual abuse dies in Thailand
BANGKOK: A controversial Tibetan monk whose best-selling book on Buddhist wisdom was overshadowed by multiple allegations of sexual abuse has died in Thailand, his official social media account reported. Sogyal Rinpoche, a former close friend of the Dalai Lama, suffered a pulmonary embolism and "left this world" at around 1.00 pm (0500 GMT) on Wednesday (Aug 28), a post on his Facebook page said. "The doctors did everything they could but could not restore the function of his heart ... Rinpoche is now resting in meditation," it said. Rinpoche penned the best-selling "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" in 1992, which became a huge hit in the West with people disillusioned with their lifestyles. It explored birth, karma, death and reincarnation, and how to train the mind through meditation. Born in 1947 in Tibet, Sogyal Lakar Rinpoche was recognised as the reincarnation of Terton Sogyal, a teacher of the 13th Dalai Lama. In the 1970s he became more prominent … [Read more...] about Tibetan Buddhist teacher Sogyal Rinpoche accused of sexual abuse dies in Thailand
2024 Paralympics? Bring it on, says 20-year-old rider with cerebral palsy
SINGAPORE: Under the watchful eye of her trainer, 20-year-old Alina Seow guided her horse with practiced ease, rounding the training pen again and again. They were practicing their walk, a lighter training than usual due to Alina’s recent knee injury. As a rider with cerebral palsy, Alina faces more obstacles than able-bodied riders. For one, she has more trouble balancing on her horse and requires a special saddle to help her sit tight. She also uses two thin whips to direct her horse, instead of her legs, like how able-bodied riders would. But she is not daunted. Alina is able to hold her own even when competing with able-bodied riders. She competed in a horse show at the Selangor Turf Club back in 2013. “They told me to be careful, because it’s not (competing with riders with disabilities). And then I went there (and competed) in two categories that they specially included for me,” she said, describing the competition. While she did not achieve a personal best at … [Read more...] about 2024 Paralympics? Bring it on, says 20-year-old rider with cerebral palsy
Commentary: Tantrum diplomacy in the arrest of one Huawei executive
BEIJING: As Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou sits in Canada, awaiting potential extradition to the United States, her case underscores two themes that have become evident throughout 2018: First, the ambitions of China’s technology and telecommunications firms are feeling a pronounced pushback from across the developed world, which is likely to severely hamper their abilities to reach their lofty development and expansion goals. This also puts China’s ambitious development objectives in question as well. Second, the tools of statecraft which China seems to rely on in managing the more tempestuous global environment are remarkably limited, and often counterproductive. The 46-year-old Meng, daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei and the firm’s chief financial officer, was arrested on Dec 1 in Vancouver. She faces charges in the United States of fraud involving millions of dollars in an attempt to evade US sanctions of Iran. This has provoked an outcry in China, with … [Read more...] about Commentary: Tantrum diplomacy in the arrest of one Huawei executive
