Traditions die hard in Bangkok’s oldest quarters. In the bustling streets and long-established communities that feed down towards the Chao Phraya river, it can feel as though the breakneck pace of change that defines Thailand’s capital is slower. Here, garish gold shops sit cheek by jowl with stores specialising in Chinese medicine, wizened aunties tend sizzling woks, and market holders hawk pirated Cantonese blue movies and Peoples Republic ephemera on the pavements. Closer inspection though reveals an area that is evolving as quickly as any in the city. READ > In Bangkok, venture beyond the Sukhumvit-Silom clusters to find hidden gems While the long tail boats and ramshackle ferries that chug up and down the muddy watercourse hark back to the past, a range of showpiece projects including mixed-use complex IconSiam and the new Chao Phraya Estate, which will encompass a new Four Seasons hotel, Four Seasons-branded private residences as well as the first Capella Hotel … [Read more...] about Witness the gentrification of Bangkok’s old quarters down by the Chao Phraya

What do you do when you’re stationed in Taipei for a couple of months? You eat your way through it, of course. That’s exactly what Singapore actors including Desmond Tan, Romeo Tan and Elvin Ng did when they were filming for the Taiwan-Singapore co-production All Is Well, a new Mandarin drama premiering on Monday (Aug 26). They were there for up to four months at a time, working and, of course, working out their appetites. READ: Zoe Tay as Romeo Tan’s mum? Just one of the challenges for the cast of All Is Well “I can give you all my bookmarked lists – there are lots!” enthused Romeo, who had the perfect excuse to eat like there was no tomorrow – he was told to put on 10kg for the role. “If I have friends going to Taiwan, I’ll tell them, ‘You need to go to this place for breakfast, then move on for this place for brunch, then go for high tea over here, then go for steamboat at night. Philippines ‘open’ to dengue vaccine as outbreak kills hundreds
MANILA: As hundreds die in a severe dengue outbreak in the Philippines, many of them children, President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday (Aug 8) he was open to lifting his government's blanket ban on the Dengvaxia vaccine. READ: Philippines declares national dengue epidemic as 622 people die of disease Manila prohibited the import, sale and distribution of the drug - manufactured by French pharmaceutical firm Sanofi - after parents blamed it for the deaths of several dozen children who were among more than 700,000 people immunised in a state-run trial programme. After the Dengvaxia scare caused Filipinos to shy away from vaccines, the country was hit with measles and dengue outbreaks that have so far killed nearly a thousand people this year. The government declared a dengue epidemic on Tuesday. While he was "in a quandary" regarding the use of Dengvaxia, Duterte said the perceived risk had to be weighed against the 662 deaths from out of the 146,000-plus dengue cases monitored … [Read more...] about Philippines ‘open’ to dengue vaccine as outbreak kills hundreds

How to have a good flight and make the best of your time in the air
We're used to thinking about flying as an elaborate form of modern-day torture – and in many instances, this can be true. But it's also possible – and, indeed, advisable – to make the best of any situation, including being trapped on giant flying machine with 300 other people and a limited choice of chicken or fish. Sit back, as much as the airline seat will allow, and relax. Here are some strategies for making your time in the air more comfortable. BYO SCREENS In-flight entertainment is beginning to disappear on planes. Based on the age of the plane, you may still get the screens that fall from the ceiling and broadcast one movie throughout the plane; have an in-seat screen that you may or may not have to pay to use; or have access to Wi-Fi and the ability to access free movies via the airline’s app on your own device. TRY TO SLEEP Use eyeshades, earplugs and a neck pillow. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Use herbal remedies to encourage sleep. “For overnight flights, … [Read more...] about How to have a good flight and make the best of your time in the air
