My father, late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, studied the ground realities when he came to power in the undivided Andhra in 2004. In 1997, more than 7,000 farmers had committed suicide in the state. Instead of going to the root cause of the problem, the then TDP dispensation brushed the issue under the carpet by passing the buck on to spurious seeds, pesticides and other trivial issues. YSR understood the problem and realized that most of the farmers committed suicide because of debt. They incurred debt for three reasons: children’s education, health issues and for sinking bore wells in the absence of surface water. That’s what brought about the fee reimbursement scheme, Arogyasri; irrigation projects and free power supply to the agriculture sector.
