Germany: CDU’s Armin Laschet reportedly has majority support for chancellor candidacy

· January 12, 2021 ·

The state parties of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) stood behind their party's national leader, Armin Laschet , to stand as candidate for chancellor in national elections set for September, it emerged on Monday following a meeting in Berlin. Hesse state premier Volker Bouffier, who attended the meeting of major CDU figures, told Germany's dpa news agency that Laschet has the support of majority of leading CDU figures. The news gives Laschet an important boost, but the final decision on the candidacy has not yet been made, as Laschet's rival, Markus Söder, Bavarian state premier and leader of the CDU's sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), on Sunday declared his interest in the candidacy. That set the scene for a week of uncertainty for the CDU/CSU alliance since Söder currently enjoys more popularity than Laschet among the German population at large — and among CDU voters. On Monday afternoon, Laschet told reporters that he would speak to Söder during … [Read more...] about Germany: CDU’s Armin Laschet reportedly has majority support for chancellor candidacy

Why Some People Refuse to Practice Social Distancing

· March 29, 2020 ·

In the past month, a bit of invasive viral RNA has crafted the entire world’s behavior and kept us tethered to our houses. A global call for inaction for the greater good is unprecedented in our lifetimes. The instructions are simple: There is a pandemic. Stay home. But staying at home turns out to be an impressive act of collective compassion and collective strength. This is a stretch for many. For others, the effects of social distancing feel like a tidal wave within a family, even in the absence of personal sickness. Staying 6 feet apart is inconvenient, but adherence, or lack thereof, to social distancing guidelines is making partners fight and splitting houses. The people who refuse to fully socially distance are not heartless people—in fact, they are often the doers among us, the people who normally rush in to help and now feel … [Read more...] about Why Some People Refuse to Practice Social Distancing

Traffickers seen thriving in Europe as COVID-19 hits victim support

· April 12, 2021 ·

LONDON — Human traffickers across Europe have taken advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to exploit more vulnerable people, while efforts to bring them to justice and support their victims have been disrupted, a European human rights body said on Friday. COVID-19 restrictions and the economic fallout have worsened the outlook for victims of trafficking on the continent, who are less likely to be identified or able to access healthcare and shelter, according to a report by the Council of Europe (CoE). “The effects of the pandemic have made victims of human trafficking even more vulnerable,” said Helga Gayer, head of the council’s group of anti-trafficking experts – known as GRETA. “Traffickers have made the most of the situation, exploiting the precarious financial situation of many of their victims.” While there is no Europe-wide estimate, about 25 million people worldwide are trafficking victims – the United Nations says – with fears growing that more will be exploited as … [Read more...] about Traffickers seen thriving in Europe as COVID-19 hits victim support
