Angela Merkel gets her AstraZeneca COVID vaccine shot
A photo, a few brief lines in a statement, that's that : Unlike many other world leaders, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has not made much of a fuss about the fact that she has now been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine , made by a British-Swedish manufacturer. The 66-year-old chancellor received the vaccine at the specially installed center in Berlin 's former Tempelhof airport, which is currently working exclusively with AstraZeneca, a vaccine that is only available to the over-60s in Germany, because of a marginal risk of blood clots . Around 3,000 people a day can currently receive a vaccination there. The vaccination was announced by her spokesman Steffen Seibert in a post on Twitter. Merkel said: "I am delighted to have received my first vaccination today with AstraZeneca. I thank everyone who is involved in the vaccination campaign — and everyone who gets vaccinated. ADB helps Hanoi to upgrade anti-flooding facilities
Upon addressing the seminar, Tran Quang Hoai, general director of the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, emphasised that climate change has made natural disasters increasingly extreme. In addition, infrastructure facilities that have been built for the purpose of responding to natural calamities in several places have failed to meet relevant requirements. As a means of reducing the damage caused by natural disasters, the central management board for irrigation projects has proposed using approximately US$275 million in order to implement the project. This will see the upgrade of anti-flooding facilities for dykes in the Hong (Red), Thai Binh, and Ma rivers, whilst reinforcing the embankments as a way of preventing landslides occurring at critical dyke sections. Furthermore, domestic and international consulting units have proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the ADB move to increase investment in enhancing the capacity … [Read more...] about ADB helps Hanoi to upgrade anti-flooding facilities
America’s next ‘energy diplomat’ must thread a difficult needle
The next Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources will assume the office at a pivotal time both in terms of U.S. energy security and global economic statecraft. The role has no rulebook, training program, or safety net — but it is critical for America and free nations around the world that our next “energy diplomat” succeed. The State Department is the foundation of America’s security apparatus, and energy diplomacy is — at its core — a matter of national security. Throughout history, nations have sought to coerce rivals by restricting or controlling critical resources. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger understood this lesson well. In response to the 1970s oil embargo, he co-founded the International Energy Agency in order to provide a countermeasure against the “oil weapon.” Today, America’s private sector-led energy abundance offers countries an alternative to Russian energy dependence and a buffer against countries like Iran that use oil sales to fund terrorism. … [Read more...] about America’s next ‘energy diplomat’ must thread a difficult needle
