Since giving birth in May 2020, U.S. women’s soccer star Alex Morgan has been able to bring her daughter Charlie on the road. “It’s important to allow mothers the option to have their kids with them while they compete. I’ve been lucky to be able to do that every single camp,” Morgan said in a U.S. soccer media call earlier this month. But Morgan is currently unclear on whether Charlie will be able to join her at this summer’s Tokyo Olympics. In March, it was announced that – due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – overseas spectators won’t be allowed to travel to Japan for the Games. “We share the disappointment of all enthusiastic Olympic fans from around the world, and of course the families and friends of the athletes, who were planning to come to the Games,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a press release . While Morgan says she understands the decision, she is uncertain about what it will mean for her family given their specific … [Read more...] about With overseas fans barred from Olympics, new moms ask: what about my baby?

‘After 50 Years of Sexual Assault Shame, I’m Finally Reclaiming My Voice’
A hand brushed my crotch as the subway left the station. We were crammed inside the E train, delayed due to ongoing police activity. Dressed in my navy-blue suit and burgundy tie, I was heading from my gay-friendly Chelsea neighborhood to a midtown Manhattan office. More commuters pushed into the car. I got shoved into a metal pole as the doors closed. Fingers stroked the front of my pants. A bead of sweat trickled down my armpit. I looked into the face of a balding man with a comb-over. He was taller and heavier than me, but his size shouldn't have intimidated. At 33, I was strong and fit. "Back off!" I yelled. Then I punched him. But only in my imagination. My voice was trapped at the back of my throat. I couldn't move. My arms and legs felt as though they were weighed down by 400-pound dumbbells. His eyes seemed transfixed behind me as he held the silvery pole with one hand and fondled me with the other. The train stopped. He stopped. More people packed in. I couldn't … [Read more...] about ‘After 50 Years of Sexual Assault Shame, I’m Finally Reclaiming My Voice’
Dame Noeline Taurua happy to check Gail Parata’s Pulse
From Wellington to Glasgow and home again, netball coach Gail Parata is helming the national champion Pulse side, and can call on her old room-mate for help. Dame Noeline Taurua and Gail Parata have a long relationship, once built on deception. Now among the best netball coaches in the world, the two women have been friends since they first met playing for the imposing Wellington club side, PIC, through the 1990s. Malls in Singapore you may not know exist: PLQ, Oasis Terraces, MyVillage and more
At the rate that malls are sprouting up in Paya Lebar, the district might just become the new Orchard. There are currently six shopping malls in the vicinity, namely: Kinex (formerly OneKM Shopping Mall), Paya Lebar Square, SingPost Centre, City Plaza, Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) and Tanjong Katong complex. In fact, one of our colleagues was surprised to hear that the newly-opened PLQ even existed. Malls are being built faster than we can keep track, while older shopping centres are fading into obscurity. So much so that we bet there are some you haven't heard about, both old and new. Here's some of them: SHAW PLAZA Built in the late 1990s, Shaw Plaza is nothing like the cool and hip malls of the future such as Jewel Changi Airport and Funan. However, longtime residents of the Balestier area harbour a secret about this mall that only a few are privy to — tickets for popular movies are usually available at this movie theatre, even during peak hours. The number of … [Read more...] about Malls in Singapore you may not know exist: PLQ, Oasis Terraces, MyVillage and more
