UK unemployment falls again under government’s jobs shield

· April 20, 2021 ·

LONDON: Britain's unemployment rate unexpectedly fell for a second month in a row to 4.9% in the December-to-February period, most of which the country spent under a tight COVID-19 lockdown, official figures showed on Tuesday. Most economists polled by Reuters had forecast that the unemployment rate - which has been held down by the government's huge jobs subsidies plan - would edge up to 5.1% from 5.0% in the three months to January. The ONS said the fall in the unemployment rate was linked to a rise in the share of people who were out of the jobs market altogether. The so-called inactivity rate rose by 0.2 percentage points in the three months to February. There was another reminder of the precarious state of the labour market in figures from Britain's tax office which showed the number of employees on company payrolls fell by 56,000 between February and March, the first decline in four months. That pushed up the total number of jobs lost since the onset of the coronavirus … [Read more...] about UK unemployment falls again under government’s jobs shield

· April 20, 2021 ·

Malawi’s government has fired its labor minister and ordered police to arrest several other government officials for misusing Chinese coronavirus funds, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera announced Sunday. President Chakwera said he had commissioned an audit to determine how a sum of $7.95 million intended for Malawi’s official coronavirus government response had been spent. The audit found that some of the aid package “had vanished, been misused, and left idle,” Chakwera said, according to Reuters. “As I speak, over a dozen individuals suspected of committing the crimes exposed by this audit report have been arrested,” Chakwera said during a nationally televised speech on April 18. He added that members of Malawi’s office of the president and cabinet were among those arrested. “There are no sacred cows,” Chakwera said. “If the finger of evidence points to you … you are going to prison.” At least 14 people have been arrested in connection with the corruption scandal so far, … [Read more...] about Malawi: Coronavirus Corruption Results in Mass Arrests of Top Government Officials

7 ways UK may try to block Super League as government vows it ‘must be stopped’

The Prime Minister told fans: "We are going to look at everything that we can do with the football authorities to make sure that this doesn’t go ahead in the way that it’s currently being proposed." Ministers set up a fan-led review yesterday - almost 18 months after pledging it in their manifesto - and Boris Johnson today held a round table with the FA, Premier League and football fan groups. "The Prime Minister confirmed the government will not stand by while a small handful of owners create a closed shop," No10 said. "He was clear that no action is off the table and the government is exploring every possibility, including legislative options, to ensure these proposals are stopped." … [Read more...] about 7 ways UK may try to block Super League as government vows it ‘must be stopped’
