Inferno on Cape Town’s Table Mountain brought under control

CAPE TOWN (BLOOMBERG) - A wildfire that broke out on the slopes of Cape Town's landmark Table Mountain on April 18 and caused extensive damage to a university campus and several historical buildings has been contained. Howling winds that hampered fire-fighting efforts on Monday (April 19) abated on Tuesday and helicopters were able to resume dropping water on parts of the mountain where the fire continued to burn. Six firefighters were injured while trying to douse the flames and nine city residents received treatment for smoke inhalation, the Western Cape province, which includes Cape Town, said in a statement. Six buildings on the University of Cape Town's campus including the Jagger Library, which lost some valuable book collections, were damaged or destroyed, as well as two houses and the country's oldest working windmill. Cape Town fire damages ‘irreplaceable’ archives

A wildfire that started on Sunday on the slopes of South Africa's Table Mountain has destroyed, among others, the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus, ravaging its historic library that housed a priceless African Studies collection described as "unique in the world." For years, local and foreign academics, students, and researchers have flocked to the university's Jagger Reading Room to gain valuable insights and knowledge through its astounding collection of works pertaining to the African continent. "If you see inside, everything is gone. There's nothing left, all the books, the history, all gone. It's going to take a long time to rebuild it. Man detained as ‘out of control’ Cape Town fires continue to rage

(CNN) A man has been detained in relation to the "out of control" fires in Cape Town , which began on Sunday morning and continues to blaze 24 hours later. "One suspect in his thirties was taken into custody last night in the vicinity of Devil's Peak," the City of Cape Town said in a statement. Authorities will investigate speculation that additional fires were started and whether the original fire was an act of arson, the statement added. Around 150 firefighters were tackling the blaze on Monday, which began in Cape Town's Table Mountain National Park, damaging buildings and prompting the evacuation of hikers from the city's most famous landmark. Adverse weather conditions are hampering firefighters efforts to put out the blaze, according to the City of Cape Town which said the blaze is "not under control yet .. wind is a major contributing factor." The head of a crocodile shot by the late Prince Philip has been put up for sale on TradeMe . The preserved crocodile head belonging to Napier’s Susanna Clark has long served as a tribute to her late grandfather’s unique connection with the Duke of Edinburgh.
