NASA Dubs 39-Second Mars Drone Chopper Flight its ‘Wright Brothers Moment’
NASA scientists have described the first flight of its Ingenuity drone helicopter on Mars as its "Wright Brothers" moment. Mars Helicopter project manager MiMi Aung made the comparison in a live webcast after the historic event, saying: "We've been talking for so long about our Wright brothers moment. And here it is." Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first powered, heavier-than-air aircraft flight of the Flyer biplane on December 17 1903, with Orville at the controls. — NASA (@NASA) April 19, 2021 The Ingenuity helicopter lifted off from the surface of the Red Planet for a 39-second flight early on Monday morning, rising vertically and hovering before touching back down. — Dr. James O'Donoghue (@physicsJ) April 19, 2021 Flight on Mars is made challenging by its sparse atmosphere, having only 1.6 percent of the density of Earth's, although the planet's gravity is just over a third of ours. That is equivalent to flying 22 miles (35 kilometres) above sea level in … [Read more...] about NASA Dubs 39-Second Mars Drone Chopper Flight its ‘Wright Brothers Moment’
APC Advocates Forum backs Akpabio as ‘natural leader’ in Akwa Ibom
Kindly Share This Story: A progressive forum of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) known as APC Advocates Forum has declared that former governor of Akwa Ibom and the Minister of Niger Delta, Godswill Akpabio, is the ‘natural leader’ of the party in the state being a serving cabinet member. The group, however, called on APC’s National Caretaker Committee led by the Yobe State governor to call those sponsoring mischief against the Minister to order, adding that “the political sagacity of the former two-term governor can not be compared to any other person in the state.” In a statement released to newsmen Monday in Abuja by the national coordinator of the APC Advocates Forum, Barrister Johnson Essien, threatened to expose those behind the crisis rocking the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the party. The group described as ‘unwise decision’ for some chieftains of the party to contest the natural leadership God has bestowed on the Minister (Akpabio). … [Read more...] about APC Advocates Forum backs Akpabio as ‘natural leader’ in Akwa Ibom
Nigeria’s ‘atheist with a cause’ still in jail after a year
ABUJA, NIGERIA (AFP) - Ms Amina Ahmed is tired. Day and night, she waits by her phone for news of her husband, languishing behind bars in northern Nigeria for close to a year. Eight months after she married Mubarak Bala, a self-proclaimed atheist she met online, in an intimate ceremony, he was detained by police on April 28, 2020, and taken to an unknown destination. Since that day, Bala has been held without charges. Advocates for his release say he is accused of writing a Facebook post criticising the prophet of Islam, an act of blasphemy that can carry a death sentence in Nigeria's conservative Muslim north where sharia law is enforced alongside common law. Bala is an engineer who worked for a power company in Kaduna. He is also president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, an organisation that describes itself as "the voice of humanism in Nigeria." The 36-year-old grew up in a traditional Muslim family, with a father who had three wives and a mother who had nine … [Read more...] about Nigeria’s ‘atheist with a cause’ still in jail after a year
Now is the time for action
IN this pivotal year for humanity, now is the time for bold climate action. The science is irrefutable and globally agreed: to stop the climate crisis from becoming a permanent catastrophe, we must limit global heating to 1.5°C. To do this, we must get to net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by mid-century. Countries making up two-thirds of the global economy have committed to do so. This is encouraging, but we urgently need every country, city, business and financial institution to join this coalition and adopt concrete plans for transitioning to net zero. Even more urgent is for governments to match this long-term ambition with concrete actions now, as trillions of dollars are mobilised to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic. Revitalising economies is our chance to re-engineer our future. The world has a strong framework for action: the Paris Agreement, in which all countries committed to set their own national climate action plans and strengthen them every five years. Over five … [Read more...] about Now is the time for action
