Within a span of 40 years, China has lifted about 800 million people out of absolute poverty and become the second-largest economy in the world. In 1980 China's per capita GDP was $194.80－10 percent of Brazil ($1,947.28) and 73 percent of India ($266.58). But thanks to years of good economic management and rapid growth, its per capita GDP increased by more than 58 times to $10,216,6 in 2019－nearly 5.45 times of India ($2,099.60) and 1.31 times of Brazil ($8,717.20), according to World Bank data. China's economic performance over the past four decades has been the envy of the world. To top it, it eradicated absolute poverty last year. The UN Millennium Development Goals Report of 2015 said the goal to reduce global poverty by half by 2015, compared to the 1990 level, was possible primarily because of China's powerful performance. India's industrial production contracted by 3.6 per cent in February, official data showed on Monday. According to the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), manufacturing sector output declined by 3.7 per cent in February 2021. During April-February, IIP contracted by 11.3 per cent compared to one per cent growth in the corresponding period of 2019-20. Industrial production has been hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March last year when it contracted by 18.7 per cent. Boris Johnson has ordered an independent review into Greensill Capital following the David Cameron lobbying controversy. Top lawyer Nigel Boardman will lead the investigation into the now-collapsed finance firm's activities in government and the role its founder, Lex Greensill, played. The Whitehall review will look at how government contracts were secured by Greensill Capital as well as the actions of Mr Cameron. What is the lobbying scandal and why is David Cameron involved? HOLIDAYS in England have been given the go ahead from today, with single households allowed to book into self-catered accommodation together. Here is what we know so far about hotels opening in the UK. When will hotels reopen? Hotels have been forced to close due to the lockdown. They are only allowed to open for essential reasons, such as for key workers or for vulnerable people. They won't be able to open when the second round of lockdown restrictions are eased from today. Hotels will be able to reopen from May 17 , welcoming guests back before the May bank holidays. On June 21, holidays will resume with no restrictions in England. When will campsites reopen?
