The Villain in the Deadliest Nursing Home Scandal Is Wall Street, Not Andrew Cuomo

· February 23, 2021 ·

This story is co-published with The Daily Poster As governors in New York and Florida face political crises over their handling of the pandemic, the scandals have spotlighted how a disproportionate amount of COVID casualties have occurred in the nation's nursing homes. The situation is a cautionary tale not only about political corruption, but about the consequences of a nursing home infrastructure being run by for-profit corporations—and now a study documents some of the body count. The analysis found that between 2004 and 2016, more than 20,000 Americans perished as a consequence of living in nursing homes run by private equity firms. The data showed that going to a private-equity-owned nursing home significantly "increases the probability of death during the stay and the following 90 days" as compared to nursing homes with a different ownership structure. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago and New York University evaluated data from … [Read more...] about The Villain in the Deadliest Nursing Home Scandal Is Wall Street, Not Andrew Cuomo

My In-Laws Died in a Nursing Home. I Took on Cuomo in Their Names | Opinion

· February 23, 2021 ·

A 25-year career in broadcasting and meteorology has given me plenty of opportunities to cover major weather events. There have been category five hurricanes, blizzards that have buried towns and cities, devastating flash floods, ice storms that took out power for weeks and tornadoes carving paths of destruction for hundreds of miles. Never in my life did I ever predict that I would find myself in the middle of a raging storm involving one of the most powerful leaders in America. But after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo effectively issued a death warrant that helped kill thousands of elderly, including my husband's parents, I felt it was important to use my voice to speak out for those that no longer had one. Born and bred in Brooklyn, New York, Mickey and Dee Newman were married 60 years ago this month. We lost them both to COVID last spring as the virus ravaged their long term care facilities. Little did we know that before they died, Governor Cuomo signed an executive order … [Read more...] about My In-Laws Died in a Nursing Home. I Took on Cuomo in Their Names | Opinion

New Home Sales Rocket Beyond Expectations

· February 24, 2021 ·

Sales of new homes soared in January to a blistering seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 923,000, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. That puts sales 4.3 percent above the revised December rate of 885,000 and 19.3 percent above the January 2020 estimate. The median forecast called for an 856,000 pace. The median sales price jumped 5.3 percent from a year earlier to $346,400 from a year earlier. That is the highest for any January on record. The average sales price was $408,800, also a record high. The seasonally-adjusted estimate of new houses for sale at the end of January was 307,000. This represents a supply of 4.0 months at the current sales rate. Extremely low mortgage rates and a surge in demand for single-family homes lifted the residential real estate market last year. New homes account for about 14 percent of the housing market. But because homebuilding is labor-intensive and new homes need to be outfitted with consumer goods—such as washing machines, … [Read more...] about New Home Sales Rocket Beyond Expectations
