SINGAPORE - If he could beat Goliath, so can she. For 12-year-old Jolie Lim, who is autistic, Joseph Schooling's historic win against American swimming legend Michael Phelps is an inspirational tale about overcoming life's challenges. To express how she felt, Jolie produced an A3-sized drawing under the encouragement of her mother, Madam Fann Koh. "She's really inspired by him. The fact that he is Singaporean and did something great, she can relate to it," said Madam Koh, 46. While Jolie had hoped to meet Schooling to pass him the artwork during his victory parade on Thursday (Aug 18), the Pathlight School student had to sit her Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) oral component in the morning. As a result, Madam Koh and her daughter could only rush down to Raffles City Shopping Centre, the last stop of the victory parade, at around noon. However, Jolie is afraid of crowds and was unable to catch a glimpse of the swim star. At Madam Koh's request, The … [Read more...] about Schooling thanks Pathlight student who dedicates ‘mouse with medal’ drawing to him

Covid-19: Couple offer free rides to US vaccination centres
When US man Joseph Cicchetti rolls up to strangers' driveways in his black hatchback, he is instantly recognisable. There are not many Fiat 500s covered in handcrafted red spikes intricately designed to resemble the novel-coronavirus protein. Cicchetti had a good reason to turn his car into a mobile virus: The 58-year-old will take anyone in his suburban New Jersey neighbourhood to a coronavirus vaccine appointment aboard "Joe's Covee Car." In the past two weeks, Cicchetti and his partner, Shirley Limburg, 59, have given at least a dozen rides to residents unable to get to appointments on their own. This story was originally published on RNZ and is republished with permission. A protocol breach at an isolation facility has resulted in Fiji's first Covid-19 case outside border quarantine since March last year. Three key failures led to dead animals in Akaroa’s water supply
A litany of errors led to six dead animals ending up in Akaroa’s drinking water reservoir, forcing major disruption to supplies for the Banks Peninsula town. The Christchurch City Council has apologised to residents and business owners after an investigation found a series of mistakes were to blame for them having to boil their water for 35 days from February 12. Two dead possums and two dead birds were found inside the towns’ reservoir on February 9. But it was two days before they were removed and three days before the Canterbury medical officer of health was notified and a boil water notice issued.
