A woman who is known as ‘Mrs Fishponds’ due to her community work in the city has won a Bristol Post Gold Star award. Kate Brooks has been chosen as the winner of the charity champion award for her work in Fishponds where she has lived for 18 years. Kate – a married mum of one who also works as a foster carer – admits that she finds it difficult to ‘stand still’ which has led to her setting up and being involved in many community projects. She was a driving force behind the launch of Fish Fest to celebrate all the organisations and activities on offer in the area. The festival was initially held at the All Saints Community Hall and grounds, but as it grew in popularity it moved to the Fishponds Academy. “It was really a festival to celebrate all the great community initiatives in the area, “said Kate, 51.”We also had a variety of stalls, local producers, kids’ entertainment and music and it was a great event enjoyed by so many people.” Fish Fest, which ran for eight years, raised money for the local youth club, which Kate was also involved in setting up.
