Tampa -– The Los Angeles Raiders so dominated Super Bowl XVIII yesterday, they didn’t even have to punch anybody out. The Washington Redskins were so meek, it would have been like slapping your sister. The score told all. The Raiders’’ 38-9 victory was the most one-sided Super Bowl in history. When good teams dominate, it is usually on the ground and Raider running back Marcus Allen was the star of the game. He was a unanimous choice as Most Valuable Player after gaining a Super Bowl-record 191 rushing yards that included touchdowns of five and 74 yards, the latter another Super Bowl record. All told, the Raiders pounded out 231 yards rushing, compared to only 90 for the defending champion Skins and 64 for Washington’s one-man infantry, John Riggins. But it takes two teams to make a rout and the Redskins played a major role in their own destruction. They had a punt blocked by Derrick Jensen for L.A.’’s first touchdown. They had an extra point blocked. And Washington coach Joe Gibbs nominated himself for the title of ex-genius with a bizarre play call that became a Jack Squirek interception return in the closing seconds of the first half.
